2pc Cunard RMS Franconia 1929 World Cruise Ephemera Group

A collection of maritime ephemera from the Cunard Line and Thos. Cook and Son Around the World Cruise aboard the R.M.S. Franconia, operating from January 15 to May 31, 1929. The grouping includes a souvenir passenger list booklet and a contemporary personal letter. The booklet features a black cardstock cover with an Art Deco stylized sailing junk design in gold and yellow. Interior pages contain a comprehensive itinerary of global ports including Suez, Bombay, Singapore, Manila, Shanghai, and Honolulu, along with a list of ship officers and cruise staff. Also included is a two-page typed letter on official R.M.S. Franconia stationery dated March 25, 1929. The letter provides a detailed first-hand account of the traditional Crossing the Line ceremony at the Equator, describing the appearances of King Neptune and his court and the initiation of passengers. American businessman J.C. Penney was a passenger on this voyage. Involved in a ship collision in Shanghai harbor on April 10, 1929.
