A fine oval Renaissance pendant of pierced gold, richly decorated with polychrome enamel and pearls, centred by a carved fruit stone, probably plum stone, preserved beneath a high convex crystal or glass cover, the fruit stone is finely carved with an intertwined monogram or personal cipher, apparently formed from the stems of two flowers, probably a rose and a forget-me-not, the stems are deliberately intertwined to create the central device, suggesting that the carving was intended as a personal emblem rather than simply as floral ornament, the piece likely commissioned as a personal token of love, perhaps in connection with courtship, betrothal or marriage, the verso is glazed and backed with an old, worn red textile, probably velvet, Spanish or Spanish Colonial (possibly New Spain) late 16th or early 17th century, circa 1580-1620, 36 x 30mm approximately, 5.7 grams, presented in an antique burgundy leather jeweller’s case with suspension mount
