A Middle Byzantine devotional silver bifacial chain closure / pendant, the circular devotional fitting, probably originally forming the central closure of a necklace or chain, the discoid body enclosed within a braided border and fitted at either side with paired projecting lugs for articulated attachment, one face engraved with a figure of Christ Pantokrator, shown half-length, his right hand raised in blessing and his left supporting the Gospel, flanked by abbreviation IC XC, for Iēsous Christos — (Jesus Christ) the reverse engraved with the enthroned Theotokos, or Mother of God, seated frontally upon an elaborate high-backed throne, the flanking inscription is an abbreviation of Mētēr Theou — 'Mother of God', circa 10th century AD, 24 x 36cm, 8.5 grams
