Far from a pursuit of perfect sharpness, the artist uses grain as a material: it densifies the image, unsettles its temporality and brings photography closer to her painting work. AGATHE TOMAN Born in 1989, Agathe Toman is a French artist of French, Austrian and Czech origins. Her practice traverses painting, drawing, photography and writing. Trained at the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, she first worked in fashion and haute couture, notably for Saint Laurent and Maison Rodier, before dedicating herself entirely to her artistic practice. Her work is today shown in France and internationally. Since 2021, several of her works have been offered for sale at Sotheby’s in Paris and Cologne, notably in the Contemporary Curated, Living Contemporary and Modern & Contemporary Discoveries auctions. She participated in Art Paris at the Grand Palais in 2019 and then in 2026, as well as in DDessin Paris. In 2025, one of her works entered the collection of the Fondation BIC. Her work is present in numerous private collections in France and abroad and has been the subject of publications in various media dedicated to art and contemporary creation. Agathe Toman lives and works today in the Landes, in the southwest of France. THE PHOTOGRAPH In her photographic work, Agathe Toman primarily photographs forests, mountains, the sea and natural phenomena. Her images do not seek to document a landscape. They seek what appears when it ceases to be merely a place. The grain, deep blacks, erasures, light leaks and loss of definition gradually tilt reality toward abstraction. This approach directly aligns with her pictorial practice: covering, erasing, accumulating, removing, letting appear. "I don’t invent the images, I make them appear." Her work builds around what, in experience, precedes her understanding. An inner necessity becomes a form. Thus, photography becomes less a representation of a landscape than the trace of an experience: something between the visible and what eludes it.
