AN EMOTIVE AIF CASUALTY MILITARY MEDAL GROUP TO PTE WALLACE 3RD BN AIF / LATE 18TH BN AWARDED FOR BULLECOURT 1917 G.V.R. Military Medal, correctly impressed 2848 Pte W. J. Wallace. 3/AUST:INF: British War Medal, correctly impressed 2848 Pte W. J. Wallace. 18 Bn A.I.F Victory Medal, correctly impressed 2848 Pte W. J. Wallace. M.M. 18 Bn A.I.F . Note: W. Wallace. STO. R.N.R. Condition VF. William Wallace was born in Liverpool, England, he emigrated to New South Wales and was working as a Labourer. Aged 21 years and 4 months, he enlisted in the 18th Bn AIF at Warwick Farm NSW. After training he served for a period in Egypt from 14th February 1916 until 22nd March 1916. Wallace arrived in France on the 6th of July 1916, he was wounded in action on the 5th of May 1917 suffering a GSM to his Right Arm. On the 2nd of June 1917 for service with the 3rd Bn, he was awarded the Military Medal, which was gazzeted on the 2nd July 1917. He was originally recommended for the DCM, the original citation is as follows; ‘At Bullecourt France, Pte Wallace was in charge of a Lewis Gun Team assisting a bombing attack. He bombed a party o the enemy and drove them back in order to get a good position of his gun. He then brought his gun and supported the bombers with splendid results. Later during an enemy counter attack he kept his gun in action until it was blown out by a bomb.’ While in England recovering, he went AWOL on the 19th of October 1917 until the 2nd November 1917. He was awarded 14 days Field Punishment No 2. He returned to France and was again awarded 10 day Field Punishment No 2. On the 9th of February 1918. Tis time for using improper language to his superior officer. Sadly Wallace was killed in action on the 28th of August 1918, he was laid to rest in Heath Cemetery Harbonnieres. The RNR pair belongs to his father William Wallace, who survived the war
