Pendant with a IInd-century AD denarius of Emperor Antoninus Pius, How did he fill Rome’s treasuries with millions? And more importantly… leaving office after 23 years with an unprecedented surplus of 2,700 million sesterces (about 3,500 million euros), a fortune that includes the denarius on this pendant minted in the years 154 and 155 AD at the Rome mint. Notice: ◆ on its OBVERSE: Bare, laurel-wreathed bust of Emperor Antoninus Pius facing right. Around it the legend: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P IMP II ◆ on its REVERSE: Fortuna standing facing right, in the right hand holding a rudder placed on a globe and in the left hand a cornucopia. Around it the legend: TR POT XIX - COS IIII (Antoninus Pius held his 19th tribunician power and his 4th consulate). And it was minted with between 85% and 90% silver. Note that this financial success was achieved by: ➤ Not commanding an army. ➤ Always outside the Italian peninsula. ➤ Never trampling on others. In reality, “Titus Aurelius Fulvus Boionius Arrius Antoninus”, Lanuvium, 86 AD, an orphan from childhood, was raised by his grandparents, both consuls, on a large estate at Lorium. There he learned, among other subjects, Greek, Latin, and also a creative oratory with which, as a child, he entertained visitors. Besides, he inherited the estate that made him very rich and where he would build a palace. So you have the already-peaceful man, free from financial worries, a meticulous administrator, altruistic and mindful of others’ rights, who transformed Roman life thanks to his roles as: - quaestor - praetor - consul - governor in Asia Minor (135–136 AD) And, as is only natural, the result was “Imperator Caesar Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Augustus Pontifex Maximus” (138–161 AD): tall, slim, upright, aristocratic bearing and a deep voice, who even without military experience, carried forward what his adoptive father Hadrian had planned and improved his civil legacy. Therefore, this pioneer in the way Rome had been governed until then: • freed several senators condemned by Hadrian; • prohibited investigation of those who conspired against him; • abolished the use of informers and executions of high officials; But there is much more than that… • avoided ostentation by living in his own villas; • maintained good relations with the Senate; • sold imperial lands, limited and eliminated senseless salaries; • reduced expropriations and the burden of taxation on his subjects; • granted unrestricted access to potable water for the people of Rome; • promoted the sciences and the arts, in addition to funding salaries and honors for teachers of rhetoric and philosophy; And furthermore… • expanded the construction of aqueducts, bridges, and roads; • outlawed persecution of Christians and supported legislation more respectful toward slaves; • improved the defense of Britain by building the Antonine Wall 100 km north of Hadrian’s. In short, he devoted himself to civil life and stayed clear of the military sphere, he married Faustina the Elder between 110 and 115 AD and they had four children during part of this extraordinary period known as Rome’s Golden Age. And, of course, as you might imagine… when they offered to rename September after his name, he declined the honor. In conclusion, until March 7, 161 AD, Antoninus Pius was an emperor who cared about the stability and well-being of the Empire and its subjects, whose crowning achievement was the unprecedented surplus of 2,700 million sesterces (about 3,500 million euros). Who wouldn’t want a ruler like that? Disclaimer: I am sending you this item from Spain by registered mail with tracking number.
