Antique Art Nouveau Gold Cufflinks, c. 1900

Especially in France, where Art Nouveau was known as Art Nouveau, designers celebrated the beauty of women in countless pieces of jewellery. Their soft shapes and free-flowing hair were seen as symbols of youth and life. These gold cufflinks take up this motif and interpret it in an imaginative way. The relief depicts the profile of a young woman whose curly, luxuriant hair is adorned by a large hat. This seems to be transformed into a magnificent blossom - a characteristic fusion of man and nature that is often found in Art Nouveau. The woman's dreamy gaze is directed downwards to the right and is lost in an implied background of delicate leaves. The lost expression invites the viewer to imagine the hidden world that seems to follow her gaze. The cufflinks are exceptionally well preserved and still shine today as they did when they were made. Short chains connect the buttons with torpedo-shaped toggles and emphasize the artistic workmanship. The pair was probably made in Breslau in the c. 1900s and found its way to us via Hamburg.
