Antique Gold Brooch with Opals in a Chain Design, England c. 1900

Around c. 1900, jewellery made of intertwined ribbons with shiny gold surfaces was once again very fashionable in Great Britain. Bracelets, necklaces, earrings and brooches were created with countless variations of this motif. Sometimes the ribbons intertwine to form romantic knots, other times chain motifs are created, especially in bracelets and necklaces - and the brooch shown here. It was therefore not created from a bracelet, but was deliberately made in precisely this form. The design is elongated and widens slightly towards the middle. A natural precious opal cut into an oval cabochon shines in each of the chain links. Its intense play of colors with many red and yellow light reflections ideally complements the warm appearance of the gold. The brooch is made from slightly reddish gold. The opals most likely originate from Australia and are full opals of very fine quality. We discovered the brooch in London.
