Large Tribal Tapestry Rug Embroidered with Human Figures and Mirrors – Banjara / Kutch, Gujarat, India, 20th Century - (No. 4) Large wall tapestry made entirely by hand with rich embroidery, applique, and mirror work (Shisha). Of substantial dimensions (189 x 123 cm), it features a highly elaborate composition on multiple concentric frames. In the center are two stylized human figures (traditional women) with raised arms, one of whom holds an object (likely a jug or a ritual element). Around them develop numerous typical motifs: large rosettes, geometric stars, stylized flowers, concentric squares, and intricate patterns. Many round shisha mirrors are hand-applied across the surface, creating a beautiful luminous and sparkling effect. The borders are particularly rich, with multiple decorative bands, zig-zag patterns (wolf teeth), checkerboard, and vivid contrasting colors of blue, red, purple, and orange. This type of tapestry was traditionally made by the nomadic Banjara (Lambani) communities or by the craftswomen of Kutch in Gujarat, often used for wedding decorations, ceremonial purposes, or as a wall hanging in traditional homes. P.S. This piece is part of a rich collection of tapestries of various sizes, all hand-embroidered with different colors, designs, and ages. Stay tuned for upcoming postings or contact me if you’d like more information. For multiple purchases, I offer combined shipping to optimize transportation costs.
