ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM ETTY (BRITISH 1787-1849) STUDY OF A MALE NUDE Oil on millboard 64.5 x 46.5cm (25¼ x 18¼in.) The present picture appears to be a life room study, made under strong overhead lighting, probably at the Royal Academy. The millboard support of the work reinforces the attribution to Etty, likewise the brutal truncation of the limbs where they reach the edges of the support, which is arguably a signature feature of the artist's life room studies. The unresolved area of black paint to the left is possibly the work of a different hand and perhaps indicates the beginnings of an attempt to create a finished saleable picture from a study which was not originally intended for the market. Many of the life room studies sold in Etty’s posthumous sale at Christie’s in May 1850 were worked over by other artists with this aim.
