Balinese Boeddhabeeld - Sculpture - Indonesia (No reserve price)

This exceptionally beautiful and monumental Balinese Buddhist statue was handmade in the second half of the twentieth century, presumably between the 1960s and 1980s, from a single solid piece of suar wood. The statue shows the seated Buddha in a serene meditative pose on a richly detailed lotus seat. Behind the Buddha is an impressive, openwork aureole adorned with the refined, flowing curls that are so characteristic of high-quality woodcarving from the Ubud region of Bali, Indonesia. With the right hand, the Buddha forms the Vitarka Mudra, the traditional Buddhist hand gesture representing teaching, intellectual discussion, and the uninterrupted transmission of spiritual knowledge. The craftsmanship of the master carver is beautifully expressed in the flowing folds of the robe and the serene facial features. Thanks to the use of suar wood, the statue possesses the characteristic, flame-like two-tone grain where light and dark wood layers naturally alternate. The underside of the solid base shows an authentic weathered character with age-related drying traces, discolorations, and light lime residues, which confirm the originality and the patina accumulated on this collector’s object. This heavy quality piece is in excellent condition without distracting cracks, making it a wonderful object for collectors of Asian art and fine anthropology. Dimensions: 37.5 x 37 x 22 cm Weight: 4,180 g
