Artist: Yōshū Chikanobu 楊洲周延 (1838–1912), signed Yōshū Chikanobu (楊洲周延), with the seal Yōshū (楊洲) Title (cartouche): Komakiyama ni Yasumasa Hideyoshi o ou 小牧山ニ康政秀吉ヲ追フ ("At Mount Komaki, Yasumasa pursues Hideyoshi") Subject: Sakakibara Yasumasa and Toyotomi (then Hashiba) Hideyoshi at the Battle of Komaki, 1584 Date: 1892 (Meiji 25) Technique: Woodblock print (mokuhanga), nishiki-e (polychrome), with burnishing Format: Ōban tate-e triptych (three sheets) each approx. 24*36cm CONDITION Excellent, with minor soiling on the left sheet. Minor toning. Very good overall. The Scene In 1584 Oda Nobukatsu allied with Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the two sides fought Hideyoshi at the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute. The fighting ended in a stalemate, although Hideyoshi's forces suffered a heavy blow. Ieyasu and Hideyoshi never faced each other in person. Sakakibara Yasumasa was one of the Tokugawa's leading commanders and is counted among the clan's "Four Guardian Kings" (shitennō). When Ieyasu decided to oppose Hideyoshi, it was Yasumasa who recommended Komaki as the ground for the campaign. During the campaign he circulated a manifesto condemning Hideyoshi. It accused him of betraying the will of Oda Nobunaga and insulted his humble origins. Hideyoshi was so angry that he offered a reward of 100,000 kan to anyone who brought him Yasumasa's head. Chikanobu's title turns this quarrel into a direct pursuit, with Yasumasa riding after Hideyoshi himself. The chase belongs to the popular retelling of the campaign rather than the documented record. Chikanobu gives the pursuit the full width of the triptych. Yasumasa charges downhill at full gallop in the centre, gripping his spear in both hands with his personal standard streaming from his back. Hideyoshi, in a horned helmet, gallops away on the left waving a baton above his head. The armour and weapons are finely detailed and include burnishing.
