This painting reprises “The Pipe-Smoker” by Giovanni Battista Torriglia (Genoa, 1857–1937), a Genoese painter trained at the Accademia Ligustica and a pupil of Nicolò Barabino, best known for his interpretations of genre painting and scenes of domestic and family life, rendered with a delicate brushstroke and a warm, enveloping light that characterized his style, inherited from the Genoese master and developed in intimate family scenes that almost always take place within the walls of the home.
