First NYRB Children's Collection edition, first printing (full number line 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1). Hardcover pictorial boards, issued without dust jacket, as designed. A beautiful unread example of Barbara Sleigh's enduring fantasy classic, originally published in 1955 and widely regarded as one of the finest British children's fantasies of the twentieth century. The story follows Rosemary Brown, whose chance purchase of a broom and an apparently ordinary black cat leads her into a magical adventure involving witches, enchanted kingdoms, and Carbonel - the proud feline King of the Cats. This handsome New York Review Children's Collection edition faithfully reproduces V. H. Drummond's charming original illustrations while introducing the novel to a new generation of readers in an elegant cloth-backed binding with pictorial boards. Condition: Fine. Appears unread. Binding remains tight and square with crisp, sharp corners and a clean red cloth spine. Interior is exceptionally bright and fresh with no ownership marks, writing, bookplates, or remainder marks observed. Pages are clean throughout with no tears, creases, or stains. Issued without a dust jacket, as designed by the publisher. An outstanding collector's copy. This is the first New York Review Children's Collection edition, first printing (November 2004), confirmed by the complete number line ending in "1." While not the true first edition (published by Max Parrish in London in 1955), it represents the first appearance in NYRB's acclaimed children's classics series. One of the overlooked attractions of this edition is its thoughtful combination of historic illustration and contemporary book design. The original illustrations by V. H. Drummond, herself an accomplished children's author and winner of the 1954 Kate Greenaway Medal, are preserved throughout, maintaining the visual identity that accompanied the novel's first publication. The cover was designed by Louise Fili Ltd., the celebrated studio of Louise Fili, one of America's most influential book designers. Fili served as Pantheon Books' art director, designed nearly 2,000 book jackets, and her work is held in the permanent collections of institutions including the Library of Congress and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. This pairing of classic mid-century illustration with award-winning contemporary typography makes the volume especially appealing to collectors interested in children's book design as well as fantasy literature.
