Fossil Fish - Fossil plate matrix - Diplomystus Dentatus - 11.8 cm - 16 cm

In this lot a fossil fish of good size is auctioned on a lithographic limestone plate of the species Diplomystus dentatus. The plate measures 11.8 cm high and 16 cm wide, and the fish's body measures 13.5 cm long. Perfect preservation, natural and complete specimen, "it is an exquisite piece". It comes from Wyoming, from the famous Green River Formation deposits in the United States. Diplomystus was a freshwater fish of medium to large size, capable of reaching up to 70 cm in length, being a generalist predator with an upturned mouth that inhabited near the surface to catch its prey; other fish such as Knightia, aquatic insects, crustaceans and any other prey smaller in size. The Green River Formation, which stretches across Wyoming, Utah and Colorado, is the result of the sedimentation of a vast region of lakes that, due to various geological events, produced very fine clay and silt with low oxygen levels, contributing to exquisite fossilization including soft parts of a large number of animal and plant species as well as insects. An iconic site in paleontology in terms of the quantity and quality of its fossils. "This specimen is accompanied by an L-shaped acrylic display stand as a gift".
