Green Tourmaline Ring Set in 925 Sterling Silver New and unworn Green tourmalines are also referred to as Verdelith. This designation, however, says nothing about the mineralogical assignment to a specific type of tourmaline. The name Verdelith simply describes the color of the tourmaline. The mineral group of tourmalines comprises a number of boron-containing, similar ring silicates with a complex structure. Today twelve varieties of tourmaline are distinguished, most of which occur as solid solutions. Historically, the name 'tourmaline' was a catch-all term for unknown, usually red gemstones and was derived in the 18th century in Europe from its Sinhalese origin, meaning 'something small from the earth' (toramolli). Today, tourmalines are often called the 'gems of the rainbow' because of their many colors.
