Splendid and fascinating original print on paper (copper-plate engraving) by the famous Croatian master of fantastical surrealism, Hrvoje Šercar. The work represents one of the most beloved and sought-after themes of his entire oeuvre: the reinterpretation in a dreamlike, symbolic and geometric key of Albrecht Dürer’s famous Rhinoceros (1515). The majestic armored creature is set within a highly dynamic composition, crowned by a dense and dramatic radiance of engraved hatchings that create a striking contrast of light and shadow, characteristic of the artist’s virtuosic graphic style, strictly in black and white. The work is exceptionally catalogued as p.d.a. (Prova d’Autore) bottom left and bears the artist’s autograph pencil signature bottom right, elements that certify direct contact with the artist’s printer and that make it a piece of very high collecting interest. Artist: Hrvoje Šercar (1936–2014) Technique: Copperplate engraving on fine paper Edition: Prova d'Autore (p.d.a.) off-market, very rare Signature: Autograph signed in pencil by the artist Dimensions: with frame about 49x37 cm / artwork alone about 43x33 cm Condition: Originally preserved - see photos which are an integral part of the description Hrvoje ŠercarBorn in Zagreb in 1936 and who passed away in 2014, Hrvoje Šercar. The Hrvoje Šercar Art Gallery Galieta is considered one of the most important masters of drawing and contemporary graphics in Eastern Europe (Večernji). An artist of extraordinary visual talent, he studied and worked closely with the giants of Croatian art such as Miljenko Stančić and the great master Krsto Hegedušić, with whom he was a close artistic collaborator at the celebrated Master Workshop from 1964 to 1969 at the Art Gallery Galieta. From 1959 to 1993 he lent his visual genius as a leading illustrator for the prestigious Miroslav Krleža Lexicographic Institute. In his prolific career he has exhibited in over 60 solo shows and more than 100 group exhibitions both at home and internationally (Art Gallery Galieta). His works fuse elements of fantastic mythology, bestiaries, and surreal views, with millimetric attention to line and geometric rhythm (Croatian Encyclopedia). A must-have work for connoisseurs of 20th-century graphic art and for collectors of international surrealist art.
