IRISH SCHOOL (LATE 18TH CENTURY) THE SPIRE OF LLOYD, KELLS, COUNTY MEATH, IRELAND Watercolour and pencil Inscribed 'THIS. TOWER. EXECUTED. BY the Rt. / Hon. ble the EARL. BECTIVE on his LORDSHIPS / ESTATE was Design.d & Delin.ed BY H:A:BAKER / ARCHITECT. DUBLIN. 1791 is. 18. ft [?] diameter. & 110 ft high' (lower centre); further inscribed 'THIS TOWER / WAS ERE [?] / IN 1791' (to the plaque on the tower) 34 x 44.5cm (13¼ x 17½in.) Provenance: The Earl of Bective and thence by descent to the Marquess of Headfort The Tower of Kells (built 1791) was commissioned by Thomas Taylor, 1st Earl of Bective (1724–95) as a memorial to his father Sir Thomas Taylor, 2nd Baronet of Kells (1685–1757). In the nineteenth century the spire was used to view horse racing and the hunt. It was evidently admired in the late eighteenth century, with a newspaper reader noting that it ‘more like in appearance the Monument of London than any building of the kind here known…Lord Bective has spared no expense to render it a grand object; and from its novelty of design, does much credit to the architecture, Mr. Baker, under whose direction it has been conducted’ (Saunders’ News-Letter, 20 September 1794, p. 2) Henry Aaron Baker (1753-1836) was master of Dublin Society’s School of Architectural Drawing. He was a proponent of neo-classical principles of design and his projects provided important contributions to the historic urban fabric of Dublin, including Westmoreland Steet and D’Olier Street. A comparable study of the Tower of Kells is held in the Guinness Drawings Collection (no. 0096/069-3/3/10).
