Islamic - Samanid bowl in glazed ceramic "splashware" - 10th century CE.

Western Asia, Persia, ca. 10th century CE. "Splashware"-decorated cup in clay ceramic ware, with geometric design incised under colored glazes of green. This fully glazed plate with sgraffito and jaspe decoration is a fine example of this typology, produced in Islamic countries between the 10th and 13th centuries. The decoration, on white engobe, consists of incised motifs of spirals and tendrils framed by curved lines, splashed with yellow-brown and green enamels under a transparent glaze. Samanid Art, 10th century AD. Dimensions: diameter 19.7 cm, height 5.8 cm - Good condition. Restored from several pieces, pigments and original glaze, small chips in the decoration. Provenance: France, R.L.C. Study. Previously: Parisian collection of Mr. and Mrs. L.R. formed in the 1950s-1970s, transmitted through descendants.
