Joachim AMBERT, known as General Baron AMBERT (born at Château de Lagrezette, in Caillac, LOT, in 1804 – 1890). General and military writer, Member of Parliament for LOT in 1848 – Letter A.S. “Joachim AMBERT,” from LONDON on August 30, 1839, addressed to Viscount Théophile de BRÉMOND D’ARS. “I do not wish to leave Europe without bidding you farewell, my Colonel. I am writing this note to you from London, where we have been for a few days. Tonight we are boarding a magnificent ship that will take us to NEW YORK; from there, we will travel overland to the Gulf of Mexico. This is a wonderful journey for an artist and a writer. … I’m setting out with La Fontaine’s fables in my pocket and a rifle slung over my shoulder. I’m going to read “The Grasshopper and the Ant” in a virgin forest at the end of the world, and then I’ll fire a bullet into the gray-haired forehead of a buffalo in Canada. That’s well worth a detailed report or the third article from the platoon school. My wife and my little girl are doing wonderfully and follow me like the primitive women of the Bible following the patriarch—with smiles on their lips and their eyes turned heavenward. Farewell, my Colonel…”—1p in-4°.
