Medieval

Medieval Christendom Pilgrim's Holy Water Ampulla. Ca. 10th–14th century AD. Lead, 50 mm, 29 g. Small flask with a tapering body, flared neck and two lateral loop handles; bearing an inscription. Pilgrim ampullae were small vessels used to carry holy water or oil obtained at Christian shrines. Brought home as devotional souvenirs, they preserved a tangible connection to a sacred place and the pilgrim’s journey. Suspension loops allowed such vessels to be worn or carried on a cord. Provenance: Bought in 2026 at a Dutch auction house; previously in a private collection. Purchase invoice on file.
