Nameboard RD

A particularly finely hand-carved Javanese name plaque (papan nama ukir) from Indonesia, presumably dating from around 1960. The plaque is made from heavy and very hard tropical wood, presumably teak (jati), and richly decorated with deeply carved floral motifs and a central traditional mask ornament. In gold-colored letters stands “Rd. R. Partosoebroto”. The abbreviation Rd. was historically used for Raden, a traditional Javanese noble title. The name Partosoebroto is also found in historical Indonesian and Dutch-Indonesian sources. Dimensions: about 34 × 11 × 4 cm Weight: about 725 grams Beautiful authentic patina and signs of use/age. The gold-colored D of RD. (Raden) is partially broken and missing, as well as a tip of the mask (see photos). The exact identity of R. Partosoebroto and the precise dating have not been established. A particularly personal piece of Indonesian wood carving with a historic aura.
