Pierre de Laura - Le Trésor des Ames du Purgatoire - 1790

Pierre de Laura – The Treasure of the Souls of Purgatory A very important work, in which everyone will see the obligation they have to relieve these languishing Souls. Divided into eight Parts in the form of a Dialogue. By M. Pierre de Laura, Priest, Bachelor in Theology, from the Faculty of Toulouse. Toulouse, At Birosse, Bookseller. With Approbation & Permission. No date of printing indicated on the title page – an old edition, probably from the 18th century. Interesting religious work devoted to purgatory and to the means of relieving the souls there. The text is organized in the form of dialogues and divided into eight parts. The work notably includes a first part entitled “On the Existence of Purgatory,” followed by various parts devoted to the punishments of purgatory, to the means of relieving the souls, and to the means of avoiding purgatory oneself. Beautiful old print with ruled borders and typographic ornaments engraved, initials and characteristic typography of the period. Presence of an approbation by F. Paul Lombard, provincial of the Carmes and Doctor of Paris, as well as a dedication to Monsieur d’Olivet, superior of the Seminary and of the Missionary Congregation of Narbonne. Collation: text followed by the table of parts and chapters, which ends on page 248 with the note “Fin de la Table des Parties & des Chapitres.” A blank leaf afterwards. The copy appears complete according to the collation. Contemporary full brown leather binding, spine with raised bands, title piece and still partly legible gold lettering. Edges dyed red. Condition Copy in aged, used condition, showing the normal marks of a book of several centuries. Binding strongly patinated and rubbed, with wear, epidermises and small losses of leather, particularly at the heads, corners and boards. Old spine preserved with title piece partially readable. Interior generally well preserved for its age: old paper slightly yellowed, with foxing, stains and occasional signs of use. Some inscriptions and traces of old ink are present, notably on the first flyleaves. The defects, marks, stains and traces of time are visible in the photographs and form an integral part of the condition of this ancient copy. No modern restoration apparent. An old French devotional work and relatively uncommon, of interest for a collection devoted to theology, to purgatory, to religious history or to old Toulouse printings. Era: 18th century (attributed based on material and typographic characteristics; undated work).
