Option 1: Dutch Description Title: Pair of large Japanese blue-and-white porcelain Arita / Imari chargers – 40 cm – Edo / Meiji period (19th century) – In perfect condition Description: A gorgeous pair of monumental, antique Japanese blue-and-white porcelain chargers with an impressive diameter of 40 cm. The plates date from the 19th century (late Edo or early Meiji period) and were crafted in the famous Arita region. Both chargers feature refined, hand-painted decoration under the glaze (sometsuke): • Charger 1: Decorated with an asymmetrical composition, separated by a geometric band. One side shows a traditional landscape, the other side floral motifs in round cartouches. The back is adorned with flowing blue brushstrokes. • Charger 2: Decorated with a classical natural landscape with elements of the 'Three Friends of Winter' (pine and plum blossom). The back is elegantly painted with stylized grasses/bamboo leaves. Condition: Exceptionally good antique condition. Both chargers are completely intact: no chips, no hairlines and no restorations. The foot rings show the usual signs of age and some discoloration appropriate to the age, which confirms authenticity. They sound clear to the touch. Specifications: • Origin: Japan (Arita / Imari) • Material: Porcelain • Technique: Hand-painted underglaze blue (sometsuke) • Diameter: 40 cm each • Period: 19th century
