Its compact 38 mm stainless steel case, automatic calibre 1066 and additional 24-hour hand allowed the wearer to follow a second time zone, establishing the functional language that would define the GMT-Master for generations. The early GMT-Master is notable for how clearly its function dictates its appearance. The additional 24-hour hand and rotating bezel create an immediate visual distinction from Rolex's simpler Oyster models, while the compact case and period dial retain the lightness of 1950s production. The bezel is especially important to the character of these early references, framing the dial with a second scale that was designed to be read quickly in use.
