Sentimental Amethyst and Natural Pearl Brooch in Gold, British, c. 1890

This brooch not only impresses with its age of around 130 years, but also with its beautiful symbolism: two hearts, facing each other, are formed from amethysts and set in gold. Fine natural pearls surround the hearts. They are surmounted by a crown, which has always been a symbol of grandeur; natural pearls can also be found in the crown. Pieces of jewellery with hearts made of precious stones were a great fashion in the 18th century, which experienced a renaissance in the late 19th century. These pieces of jewellery were often formed from a variety of materials, such as diamonds, colored stones and, last but not least, pearls. Pearls have always been associated with Venus, the goddess of love, as legend has it that Venus herself was born from a shell, just like the pearl. Our small brooch, which was created in Britain around 1890, follows this fashion and, now as in Victorian times, makes a wonderful gift of love.
