Made by George W. Shiebler & Co. in New York, ca 1890. Cruciform in the “salvaged” style based on the archaeological excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum with “hewn” left-facing 14k gold male profile as well as “molten” dripping and twisted arms to suggest the destructive power of hot ash and falling masonry. Blade plain and tapering. A practical desk tool evocative of fin-de-siècle disquiet. Fully marked including maker’s and retailer’s (Galt & Bro), and no. 89X. Very good condition. Dimensions: H 12 1/8 x W 3 5/8 in. Weight: 5 troy ounces. #CC904
