Vintage Diamond Five-Stone Ring in the Victorian Style, c. 1980s

Hardly any other type of ring is as characteristic of the late 19th and early 20th century as the British "Five Stone Ring". This type of ring, which also spread to the continent, presents the five gemstones that give it its name in a magnificent row. The stones are set close together on the narrow band and have restrained settings so that they appear to float on the finger. Rings of this type were created in a wide variety of material combinations, with colored stones or diamonds, in yellow gold and with gemstone settings in platinum. The fashion-conscious lady often wore several rings of this type side by side on one finger, put together in new combinations depending on the occasion and mood. From around 1920, this type of ring slowly fell out of fashion in favor of single, larger rings - but only to experience a true renaissance at the end of the century! From around 1980, rings in this design and in the old shapes began to appear again: as part of a fashion that reappreciated historical forms. This ring was probably created in these years as a sentimental reminder of the past. It sets five diamonds in modern cuts in white gold. The stones sparkle beautifully and fine ornaments on the sides of the ring complement the play of light on the ring. The shapes are completely in keeping with the models of the turn of the century. On the other hand, the workmanship with modern diamonds and in white gold clearly indicates a later date. We were able to purchase the ring here in Berlin. It is in very good condition.
