WAS Benson (British, 1854-1924) for Morris & Co. a large oak dresser

with patinated metal hinges, the upper section with three shelves with a carved cornice detail, over a slab top, above three drawers with demilune brass handles, the open central section with a lower drawer, flanked by two outer cupboards with carved floral motifs, raised on four carved feet, marked 'MORRIS & CO/449 OXFORD ST W/1649 stamped on to the top edge of the central drawer, marked 'MORRIS & CO/449 OXFORD ST W/1649 stamped on to the top edge of the central drawer, 172cm wide, 56cm deep, 201.5cm high, Purchased from Heals by N Asherson, 1946; thence by descent. The present dresser was sold on 10 September 1946 by Heals & Son to N Asherson, 21 Harley Street, London. A drawing by Benson for this model exists. It is thought that he first created the design for his own use in a house at Manorbier, Pembrokeshire, where he had enjoyed staying since 1898. His own version, the surface stripped of all its patination, was sold at Christie's, South Kensington, on 1 July 2004, lot 83. The pattern was available from Morris & Co. as a 'Carved Oak Sideboard, Designed by Mr W. A. S. Benson' priced at £35 ('Specimens of Furniture Upholstery & Interior Decoration', trade cat., London, circa 1900-10, p.30). The present lot combines tradition in its form with modernity in its detail, like so much British Arts and Crafts furniture. Benson's detail is based on a traditional oak dresser (see, for example, Percy Macquoid and Ralph Edwards, 'The Dictionary of English Furniture', revised edition, London, 1954, Vol. II, p. 224, fig. 13). Condition Report, Condition Report, The top and bottom can be separated. 110cm high top, 91.5cm high bottom. The lower right cupboard with one shelf, the left-hand side cupboard with pegs for a shelf but no shelf present. Surface scratches, marks, and general surface wear, particularly to the extremities.
