Wedgwood Black Basalt Stoneware Rectangular Plaque

This rectangular bas-relief plaque is crafted in black basalt stoneware, a material developed and popularized by Josiah Wedgwood. The relief features a continuous horizontal Neoclassical composition. At the center, a standing male and female figure are depicted holding hands. To the right, a female figure reclines against a rocky outcrop with her arm raised, positioned near a group of trees. The far left of the composition shows a rocky landscape featuring a helmet and shield. The plaque is mounted within a tiered wooden frame that includes a gold-painted inner slip. The reverse of the frame features a circular aperture that reveals the impressed WEDGWOOD mark on the stoneware body. Also present on the reverse is a circular provenance sticker for the Rubin Collection.
