An about 300-year-old mythological and erotic glass, in excellent condition, large size 23.7 cm, beautifully engraved with special meaning. Depicted a woman nearly naked, only a cloth draped around her hips, a Putto with a bow, and from the clouds the watching laughing God Jupiter with the acorn branch in his hand and the Eagle on his shoulder, all surrounded by floral engraving. Text: DIE LIEBEN EID SCHWIRDENN WERD NICHT GESTRAFT (Translated: THE LOVING PERJURERS REMAIN UNPUNISHED) The phrase "the loving perjurers remain unpunished" is a well-known translation of a quotation from classical antiquity, originally written by the Roman poet Ovid (in his works Amores or Ars Amatoria). It reflects the cynical or resigned idea that people who vow fidelity in love (such as lovers who pledge eternal loyalty to each other) often get away with breaking that promise without consequences. According to mythology, even the gods turned a blind eye when false oaths were taken in the name of love.
