Wonderful Necklace in Gilded Silver by Theodor Fahrner, Germany circa 1955

Fahrner-Jewellery from Pforzheim occupies a special place in the history of Art Nouveau and Art Deco jewellery. Theodor Fahrner and later his successor Gustav Braendle understood better than almost any other modern jewellery manufacturer how to make artistically convincing designs and high-quality workmanship the hallmarks of their brooches, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Theodor Fahrner made artist's jewellery affordable by combining modern forms with democratic materials. He did not create individual pieces for a small elite like Lalique or Cartier, but instead produced the designs in series in silver, decorated with enamel, marcasites and occasionally precious stones. Jewellers and department stores throughout Europe sold the jewellery, which Fahrner advertised extensively in journals and magazines: "Fahrner Schmuck - nach Entwürfen bester Künstler" (Fahrner jewellery - designed by the best artists) allowed every woman to participate in a modern life full of beauty. The necklace shown here is from the "Filigree Jewellery" series, which was developed in the 1930s and produced until the 1950s. Fine twisted wires cover the surfaces of the links, giving the series its name. The centerpiece of the necklace features five voluminous agraffes, and lenticular links lead to the spring clasp. The necklace is made of silver that has been lightly gold-plated. Fahrner calls this type of gilding "antique gilding". It has a soft golden tone that makes it easy to recognize pieces of jewellery by Fahrner. The necklace is in very good condition. Fahrner jewellery is often collected.
